Dear Parents,

We're rapidly winding down to the final days of school. Many events will take place between now and the last day, and I'll try to outline some of our activities for you.

Our Spring Activities Awards Assembly will take place this coming Thursday, May 17 in the fieldhouse at 9:45 a.m. This is an all-school assembly designed for our students to support each other's achievements. Our annual Academic Awards Assembly takes place on Friday June 1 at 12:45 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. Parents are invited and we have limited seating available if you'd like to attend.

The Million Bead Project will be on display at the Pritchard Art Gallery beginning May 18, at 5:00 p.m. The artwork has been a multi-year activity for most of our local schools and should be an amazing display. We hope you are able to stop by and have a look.

May 25th is a big day for many of our students. We have three multi-disciplinary out-of-building learning experiences planned as follows:

ð The Gold Team Mall Project will use student's researching, writing, visual display, and presentation skills learned throughout the year to create a final project on a topic of their choosing. The Palouse Mall provides a real and relevant environment for the students to demonstrate their skills to parents, other students, and the community. This is an excellent opportunity to see outstanding student work in process with active student participation.

ð The Red Team will be traveling just north of Moscow to the Phillips Farm to finish up their unit on mapping, global positioning, orienteering, and team building. They will also compete in several problem-solving events such as a ropes course, trolley walk, and karaoke competition. This is a day of outdoor discovery with activities to encourage cooperative problem solving.

ð The Blue Team will be exploring the architecture of the Moscow community as part of their multi-disciplinary unit on Northwest History. They will tour historical neighborhoods and view historical buildings in Moscow. They will also locate and photograph historical architecture and complete a scavenger hunt based on Moscow's history. This will be an experience that will provide an amazing and detailed look at some of our most well-kept architectural secrets in this community.

I'm very excited that our teachers have developed these and other outstanding activities throughout the school year. Our students are exposed to incredible opportunities through the multi-disciplinary units that we are able to offer.

On Thursday, May 31, at 3:00 p.m., MJHS students who purchased a Yearbook can attend the "Yearbook Signing Party". At that time, Yearbooks will be distributed and students will have the opportunity to sign each other's Yearbook in a controlled, social setting. Please talk to your son or daughter about protecting their Yearbook and what they should and should not write. We try very hard to educate students and help them understand that it is important to write "nice things". Your help is needed for a positive experience. Students who did not pre-purchase a Yearbook can buy one on Friday, June 1, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Supplies are limited.

June 4, 5, and 6 are our last three days of school. They are very important days with finals scheduled for all classes. Students will be expected to be on their best behavior during this critical time, as we also provide time for locker clean-out and other end of the year activities. A comprehensive finals schedule is shown on the calendar below.

Regarding school lunch and lunch money balances, any balance left on meal accounts at the end of the school year will be automatically carried over to the next school year. Ninth grade student balances will be transferred to MHS. If you are leaving the district, please let the Student Nutrition Staff know and they will begin the process for a refund. If students have unpaid charges, we ask that they be paid immediately. The last day allowed for lunch charges is May 11. If you have questions about your child's account, you can view it on the Parent Portal, or you can also contact one of the cooks at MJHS.

Many people have had questions about recent litigation against the Moscow School District's levy election process. Because of the litigation, our hiring and purchasing processes have been frozen until the Court hands down a decision. If you have specific questions that you would like to ask, please contact me anytime. Other information has been, and will continue to be available in the local newspaper.

We value your continued support of Moscow Junior High School, and as always, please contact us if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dale Kleinert, Principal

Moscow Junior High School
