Dear Parents,
We are rapidly closing in on our winter holiday break. Not counting
today, there are six days of school until the break. Our last day of
school before the break is Friday, December 21. Students will return to
school after the break on Monday, January 7, 2008. The first semester
ends on January 17, which gives students only 9 days of class after the
break to finish up projects and turn in any missing/late assignments. A
calendar of events is included at the end of this letter.
We hope you are keeping track of your child's progress on PowerSchool.
If you have not been able to access this very important online tool,
please contact the MJHS office and we will make sure that you are able
to access your child's progress.
We sometimes come back after the break to find that some students made
poor choices during unsupervised time when school is not in session.
Earlier this year I sent out "Parenting Tips From the Principal". Part
of this list is attached below.
* Know where your son/daughter is at all times.
* Know the first and last name of the friends that your
son/daughter is with.
* If your son/daughter is visiting another home, talk to the
parent about their house rules and curfews before your child visits, and
make sure that the parent is going to be home while your child is there.
* Don't let your son/daughter visit homes that just "don't feel
right."
* Entertain your son/daughter's friends at your home after
communicating with the friends' parents.
More and more students receive cell phones as gifts. We certainly view
cell phones as an important communication tool for families, even though
they are not allowed in the classroom. We recommend "basic" cell phones
for junior high school age students. Phones with cameras, text
messaging, and other peripheral features just aren't needed, and can
sometimes cause serious disciplinary problems in the school setting.
>From time to time, cell phones are also stolen, and it is much easier to
replace a basic phone than one with lots of bells and whistles. I hope
this paragraph saved you a little money on your next cell phone
purchase.
Many students also receive items that go "online" as gifts for
Christmas. I received information about an upcoming program, "Growing
Up Online" that will air on Idaho Public Television in January. More
information is included below.
Growing Up Online - - coming Jan. 22, 2008
FRONTLINE looks at the impact of the Internet on adolescence through the
eyes of teens and their parents. The film takes viewers into the private
worlds kids are creating online -- from kids who are harassed and
bullied, to kids who make social connections virtually when they have
few friends at school, to those kids who attain instant celebrity on
YouTube. FRONTLINE explores the complicated new lines being drawn
between the real and virtual worlds for today's children and teens, and
for their parents, who often find themselves on the other side of a new
digital divide.
Frontline will air on Tuesday, January 22 at 9:00 pm. You can watch it
on Idaho Public Television KUID/KCDT in Moscow on cable channel 12,
satellite channel 26, or over the air on channel 35 (analog) or 12
(digital). For more information, visit the website at

This past week our Ambassadors and Student Council attended a Leadership
Retreat with 60 other students from area schools. Our students
participated in team building activities and also gained information
about WeTip, our anonymous crime tipline. Our student leaders will
provide information for the MHJS student body to show them how to report
unsafe and/or criminal situations in our school and community.
Established in 1972, the hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, 365 days a year. Callers to WeTip are totally anonymous, not just
confidential. Moscow students have used this service for over ten
years to help us solve issues before they became dangerous for our
school and our community.
We are having a very good school year. Our students get along, most of
them are working to do their best in their classes, and our teachers are
the most fantastic people I've ever known. Yesterday our staff enjoyed
a wonderful breakfast prepared by our Parent Support Team and we would
like to thank everyone who brought breakfast treats. I'm proud of the
support from our parents and I look forward to a very successful second
semester.
I wish all of you a very happy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Dale Kleinert, Principal
