One other thing - there is also emeritus pro bono status for those who wish
to stay active and provide services through a legal services provider (which
will provide malpractice coverage.)  Although I would prefer to see all
retiring members eligible for membership in listservs without fee, at least
consider pro bono status without a fee.

A couple bits of perspective here:

1. When you retire, each of  you will have to decide whether to maintain a
bar membership or not. I researched bar membership as part of that decision.
Based on a random selection of about 200 people with bar numbers, I found
that about 10 percent of people who have ever had bar numbers are living,
voluntarily resigned from the bar, and had no disciplinary history. It
appears to be common that people who decide to retire also decide to forego
the costs - both money and time - of bar membership. Additionally, to get
malpractice coverage under a tails policy, you have to quit.

2. Retirement does not wipe your brain. You still know legal stuff - a lot
of legal stuff. 

3. Retired lawyers are not looking to get practice benefits from the section
- they're looking to give benefits. They are a resource. 

 

So I rephrase the question:

 

Can WSBA figure out how to give its members the additional benefit of
communication with old former lawyers who've seen it all? 

Look at us as assets, not free-riders. 

 

 

Personally, no I won't stick around if I have to pay to give away my time.
