Patrick, what compelling arguments?
I found a case addressing the issue under the previous codification of the
statute you cite: First Nat'l Bank of Everett v. Tiffany, 40 Wn.2d 193
(1952).

Subject: Re: [WSBARP] possession after a sheriff's sale
Even if the debtor cannot claim a homestead exemption against an execution
sale, the debtor can probably still claim it to assert a right of possession
during the redemption period. See RCW 6.23.110(4) and Washington Practice,
vol. 28, § 7.22.
There are some pretty compelling arguments that this should not be the case,
however.

A sheriffs sale occurs following the foreclosure of a lien that may be
enforced against a homestead. Is the judgment debtor, who lives on the
foreclosed property, entitled to possession during the redemption period?
