I think they can go back several years... however, this certainly was not a “known creditor” so if you published a notice to creditors, wouldn’t you be able to simply deny their creditor claim if they file one?

Subject: [WSBARP] Property tax exemption denial

I had a client who passed away on February 3, 2014. He had lived in his house for a couple of decades and had a senior exemption on the property taxes. When he passed away, he was current in his tax payments. We opened the estate, sold his property, made the distributions and closed it down. I received a call from the title company yesterday informing me that Snohomish County has now denied the senior exemption for 2013 and 2014 and instituted the back due taxes. While I have seen them cancel the senior exemption as of the date of death, I have not seen them go back to a prior year and retroactively deny it (especially since he was alive the entirety of 2013 and his taxes were timely paid). Can anyone point me in the direction of any RCW or WACs that would give them this authority?
