[WSBAPT] retirement

Three years ago, I announced that I would retire in two years. Then, just before the two years expired, I extended it by one year because some cases came in that I really wanted to work on (evidence that I really enjoyed the practice of law). That lead everyone to believe that I was never serious about retiring in the first place, a common occurrence with old lawyers. Everyone feared that I would hang on forever.
But not me. The three years will expire in two weeks, and so I will retire on December 31, 2024, and join my wife, who retired from the practice of law three years ago.
I plan to keep some of my professional memberships, such as the OSB estate planning listserv and ACTEC. Here in Oregon, I will give up my bar license and become “retired,” a status that is nearly identical to being inactive. I am told that I can write articles, give CLE presentations, and participate in listservs, even though I am retired. But I cannot offer any legal advice to any clients or to lawyers for their clients. (Apparently listservs and CLE presentations are not considered to be legal advice, for some reason.)
In Washington, I will not move to inactive status, but instead I plan to resign from the Bar. If anyone knows how I can remain on the Washington estate planning listserv, please let me know. Or if you simply know how to make it happen, you have my permission to do so.
My phone number and email address here at Black Helterline will no longer work after December 31. Anyone who wants to contact me can do so at philipnjones at yahoo.com<mailto:philipnjones at yahoo.com> or at (503) 853-1482, which is my cell phone.
There are a few parts of practicing law that I will not miss, but on the whole it has been a very interesting and rewarding career, largely because of the many wonderful people with whom I have worked. I could not possibly list all of the fabulous people who have helped educate me and entertain me over the last fifty years. If I tried to prepare a list of all of those people, I would never be able to complete it. Similarly, I could not possibly compile a list of the high points and the fun points; I hope a list of the low points would be very short, but I will leave the compilation of that latter list to others. If anyone compiles such a list, please send me a copy.
See you on the listserv,
Phil Jones
