[WSBAPT] New death certificate law

I had about 7 billable hours involved in getting a “presumed death by drowning” death certificate from the state and the coroner.  about 4 hours and dozens of calls and emails were involved with the DOH

Thanks, Dalynne. I checked the new WAC 246-491-010, which provides (7) "Legal representative" means a licensed attorney representing either the subject of the record or qualified applicant. So it appears I can continue my standard practice of ordering copies of the death certificates if the client does not have it handy. I wonder if they will require any specific documentation that I represent the PR.

Subject: [WSBAPT] New death certificate law

The new death certificate law went into effect Jan 1.  There is now an informational copy and then the certified copy.

In a recent probate, I received a court order to “correct” the person who reported was not a spouse although she reported on the death cert. that she was the spouse.

It was not easy and took 2 court orders and 3 tries to get it right with the WA State Dept of Health.

Thought others would like to know:

Who can order certificates

Important Note: Starting January 1, 2021, a new vital records law and rules go into effect that changes the ordering requirements for birth and death certificates.

·         For increased security of personal information, only individuals with specific relationships to the person on the record being requested can receive a certified copy.

·         Identity and proof of relationship documentation will be required. Exact documentation is still to be determined.

·         Certificate fee will increase to $25.00 per copy.
