I believe that this was debated on the Oregon listserv recently, and it was pointed out that veterinarians will not kill healthy animals, although these are apparently not healthy.

If this couple continues to insist upon killing their pets as part of their estate planning, I would withdraw from representation.

If they are willing to consider different options, our website has some resources that might be helpful: https://staceyromberg.com/estate-planning/list-of-washington-animal-welfare-charitable-organizations/

I remember someone asking a similar question a couple of years ago and the lesson learned was that there were state laws prohibiting burials of human remains with animal remains. You should call a local funeral home to check this out.

Subject: [WSBAPT] Pets in Will

I have a different request for a Will: The married couple has several animals and most are not well. They have no one to leave these animals (dogs and horse).
Upon the death of the 2nd spouse, any living pets will be destroyed and put with the cremated remains of the decedent.
I suggested contacting the vet clinic where they currently treat their pets to see if there is an alternative to destruction. Any other suggestions?

Does anyone have language for a Will or is there a separate directive to be made for directions for pets after death? Thank you.
