Brent,
Below are three Spanish language translators that provide written
translations that you can check with. If none of those are
available, you could get a list from Martha Cohen at Interpreter
Services as Tara suggested.
As a warning, that’s an arduous process as many interpreters don’t do
written translation, only oral / spoken. It can also depend on
their schedule and the list also turns over pretty quickly.
I am bilingual and I prepare wills, etc. for clients who are
monolingual Spanish speaking. Although I always explain the documents
in Spanish, for a number of reasons, I always prepare the documents in
English and have them translated by a certified interpreter. The most
important reason is that any foreign language documents submitted to
court must be translated into English by a certified translator.
So, I always start by assuming that the documents could be submitted
to court here in the U.S. and that it will eventually need to be in
English. As a practical matter, I want my staff to be able to
read what’s in my files, and in the interest of self- preservation, if
there were ever a dispute over the translated meaning of a word or
phrase, I would prefer to have a certified translator take the heat.
