[WSBAPT] Does adoption affect SSI?

Good morning, Listserve folks,

I have a client with a 12-year-old daughter from a previous (non-marital) relationship. The father was aware of the child but neither visited her nor paid child support. Upon learning that he died of a drug overdose, client was able to establish paternity post-mortem and child now receives $600/month of dad’s social security. Client is now married and step-dad would like to adopt the girl, but they do not want to give up the social security income that the girl receives. Would the adoption cut off the social security income from the child’s biological father?

Thanks in advance -

Amy
