The father was aware of the child but neither visited her nor paid child support. Upon learning that he died of a drug overdose, client was able to establish paternity post-mortem and child now receives $600/month of dad’s social security. Client is now married and step-dad would like to adopt the girl, but they do not want to give up the social security income that the girl receives.
