I have had the same experience and in most cases the bank employees will automatically set it up that way with no discussions as to the consequences unless they are instructed otherwise which causes problems if account set up between parent and one of the children for sole purpose of allowing child to write on the account for convenience purposes.

Jacob;
I've actually had clients move financial institutions based on this "quirk." I think the bank is afraid of liability. Eileen

A personal banker at a very large bank is insisting that a couple cannot have their bank checking/savings/CDs held other than as joint tenants with right of survivorship. She said she checked with her back office and because of a quirk in Washington law that's the bank's policy. I have not spoken with anyone but the personal banker. Before I pursue this further, I will ask this group, is there something I am missing? Have others had this problem?

Thanks,

Jacob
