[WSBAPT] Decedent with Significant Property in India

Hi Jared,

I wonder if you have gotten any assistance with this? On a personal & anecdotal note, my husband's father, an Indian citizen, died two years ago in India owning real estate. We have yet to succeed in transferring either parcel of real estate or any other property to the surviving spouse, because at least the real estate goes through the local community Thasaldar, who as far as I can tell has too much arbitrary authority and comes from the position of doubting that what the surviving spouse says is true. We have jumped through numerous costly hoops of obtaining and mailing documents and have been told such things as, "Now you have to go back to the neighborhood where the residence is located, that you and your spouse supposedly lived at together, and obtain ten signatures from the neighbors verifying that you are who you say you are and that you really did live there together." It is mind-blowingly frustrating. A an Indian lawyer was hired early on and he accomplished absolutely nothing.

If you learn of someone who has success at handling such issues in India I would certainly love to hear about him or her!
