'Wobbly cats' with unusual condition adopted at Huron Valley

A little-known cat illness might make your cat look like it's raving at an electric dance music concert.

But the jiggles are actually thanks to "wobbly cat syndrome," an unusual condition that affected two kittens adopted out of the Humane Society of Huron Valley on Friday.

Izzy and Twitch were brought in as strays from Ypsilanti at the end of October. Last Friday, the rescue put up a Facebook post describing the kitties' unusual way of wiggling through the world.

"Of course, Twitch and Izzy have no idea they’re different!" the post reads. "They’re not sick or uncomfortable … just a bit clumsy sometimes!"

A few hours after the post went up, Ryan Ferguson noticed it from his home in Richmond. He showed it to his 5-year-old daughter Cahlan.

"My daughter said that her heart hurts, and she said that they need love too," Ferguson said. "It was kind of a done deal at that point."

The family drove an hour and a half to swoop up the kittens that same day. Hestia, the kittens' mom, was also adopted out of the shelter. 

Wobbly cat syndrome's official name is cerebellar hypoplasia. It's a neurological condition that doesn't worsen over the years, but kittens born with it are frequently euthanized based on misconceptions, the post continued.

"It's not very common, but we have seen it at least a handful of times over the last five years," Welch said. "People who adopt these cats love them, they're full of personality and are just wonderful little cats."
