Letter: Ask candidates their thoughts on Medicaid expansion

With political signs popping up, there is no doubt an election approaches. Sure enough, the May primary is only six weeks off. When you run into a candidate, ask them what they think of getting Medicaid expansion on the ballot. Ask them if they've signed the petition. Ask them if they have collected signatures.

Expanding Medicaid eligibility would allow counties to get rid of indigent health care payments, let the state drop catastrophic care payments and improve access for preventive care for low income workers. It makes fiscal sense. It makes common sense. It makes moral sense.

Utah just voted for it. Montana expanded Medicaid two years ago and has shown dramatic economic benefits.

Polls show 75 percent of Idahoans support this, but just a slim margin of Republicans (90 percent of Democrats and 55 percent of Republicans) do, so ask the candidates you run into whether they support such a plan. Even more, decide where you stand. If you think Idaho voters deserve to vote on this issue, sign the petition. It's time we elected representatives who will speak for all of us, not just the ones they agree with.
