> Settlement Restricts Mega-Loads on Hwy 12!

> Advocates for the West is thrilled to announce we just finalized a settlement agreement with the U.S. Forest Service restricting mega-load shipments on U.S. Highway 12 to protect the Lochsa and Middle Fork Clearwater Wild and Scenic Rivers!

> The settlement resolves a 2013 federal court lawsuit that we filed for Idaho Rivers United, along with the Nez Perce Tribe. Public protests of megaloads on Hwy 12 resulted in arrests of the entire Nez Perce Tribe leadership in August 2013, leading to the lawsuit and a federal court injunction ordering the Forest Service to close Hwy 12 to further megaloads until it studied their impacts on the Wild and Scenic River corridor and consulted with the Tribe.

> We have been in federal court mediation since then, while the Forest Service conducted a corridor study and Tribal consultation. Based on overwhelming public concern, the Forest Service agreed that megaloads should be prohibited from Highway 12 in the Wild and Scenic corridor – and yesterday sent a letter to Idaho Transportation Department with its conclusions.
