I agree with Saundra Lund that the treatment of animals she describes in
her post is objectionable.

Given I sometimes approach language as a poet, I love loose word play.  And
while perhaps the word "assess" was simply misspelled twice in Lund's post
as "asses," the following definition might have been either consciously or
unconsciously
intended.  One way or the other, the animals in question were treated as
though they were "asses" by other beings who were behaving as "asses."

I emphasize that I mean no disrespect to donkeys, an animal that is
sometimes called an "ass."

Just a suggestion:  Those familiar with rural farm life know that so called
"feral" cats can be trapped and spay/neutered, or not, and relocated to be
employed as rodent control on farms, sometimes called "barn cats."
