Moscow man pleads guilty to Facebook threats
Paul J. Suggs used social media to make threats against Moscow and Pullman police officers and their families
A 19-year-old Moscow man will be sentenced in April for making threats on Facebook from Germany to kill Moscow and Pullman police officers and their families.
A federal grand jury indicted Paul J. Suggs on a single count of felony interstate communications of threats in December after Suggs reportedly made "several different threatening posts on Facebook," according to court documents. Suggs pleaded guilty Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Candy W. Dale in Coeur d'Alene as part of a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Suggs will be sentenced at 4 p.m. April 5 at the federal courthouse in Coeur d'Alene. He was arrested Jan. 5 in Whitman County on an arrest warrant issued Dec. 16, and is in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The federal case against Suggs was filed after court documents indicate he was the subject of a burglary investigation in September in Whitman County. Suggs left the country shortly after the burglary was reported to visit relatives in Germany.
While in Germany, he reportedly posted threats that "involved shooting a citizen, shooting law enforcement officials and harming the families of law enforcement officers" in Pullman and Moscow, according to court documents. Suggs reportedly "used language that was very graphic and knew he was communicating a threat" and sent photos of himself holding a handgun via Facebook.
The maximum punishment for felony interstate communications of threats is five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release. As part of the plea agreement, Idaho U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson will recommend a lesser sentence for Suggs and not file any additional charges based on his alleged actions in August and September related to the Internet threats.
Suggs has retained Moscow attorney Mark T. Monson to represent him in the case.
