[Vision2020] Macy's closing

I think Macys (previously the Bon Marche) has been in that location since
1979 (almost since the Palouse Mall opened), and 47 people will lose their
jobs:

This is really sad news in my book :( I'm sure it won't bother the college
kids too much, and we have no lack of cheap merchandise available for
purchase on the Palouse, but Macy's was one of the few retailers that still
sold quality stuff for real adults.

I suspect the result for this family will be that we will do more of our
shopping online.

That's not particularly good news for rural Northwesterners. Whether this
turns out to be a major transition, or just a change of anchor tenants,
remains to be seen, but it's not something to ignore.

When did David's department store close in downtown Moscow? When did the
Palouse Mall open? When did Macy's move into that location?

This is not the village of Moscow, population 2,500, losing its only family
clothing clothing store, and generating permanent economic ripples
throughout the community, but it's not insignificant either. There is no
need to press a panic button. Nonetheless, caveat.

Car dealerships disappearing a few years ago, now larger box stores (Office
Depot, Macy's); University enrollment slipping; Moscow needs to consider
some new non-retail economic development to bring sales revenues into the
area in exchange for products shipped out to customers.

Thales, the first philosopher, figured out how to make some money within his
locality. So can his successor contemporaries here.
