First grass mail: 50 lbs. of pot sent to Hazlet
HAZLET - There's unexpected mail and then there's this.
Hazlet Township Police announced Thursday morning that — thanks to a wary homeowner — officers had intercepted a 50-pound shipment of professionally-packed marijuana on Tuesday.
"If you were expecting these packages and would like to claim them, please come to Police Headquarters," reads a post on the department's Facebook page.
Officers were called to a home where a surprising delivery had been made. The resident had no idea who the name on the packages was and was concerned enough to call police, according to Hazlet Detective Lt. Ted Wittke.
Officers left with several boxes and opened them in order to find a packing list which would contain information on the intended recipient, according to police. Instead, they found 31 sealed bags of marijuana weighing a total of 50 pounds.
"Whoever packaged these definitely took quite a bit of time and energy to mask anything that was detectable," Wittke said.
The street value of this seizure could be up to $100,000, depending on how potent the particular strain of marijuana is, according to Wittke..
Wittke said police were releasing no more details to both protect the homeowner and the investigation. Anyone with information can contact the township police department at (732) 264-6565.
