Sunil,
It was the Jamin Wight case. If my memory serves me correctly, he was 23 or
24 when he started grooming his then 13-year-old victim. I posted the
following a couple on V2020 a couple of years ago, although I didn't name
Bradbury:
I remember being outraged at the excuses the judge made for that POS
(something akin to "he was homeschooled and thus was immature") when
allowing him to plead to a non-sex offense and thus escape lifetime sex
offender registration. At the time, I tempered my outrage with the foolish
notion that perhaps the plea deal was acceptable to the young survivor.
It wasn't until several years later I learned the survivor felt betrayed for
what passes as justice for children in Latah County. That courageous
survivor's betrayal not only by her predator but also by the judicial system
haunts me to this day.
Actually, since she speaks out herself, I think it more appropriate to
provide Natalie's own poignant and powerful words:

I am no longer a victim, but I am loud, and here is my story. If you feel
inclined please share it, or share yours, or share someone else's but
please, for the sake of innocence, community, and love, BE LOUD.
More specifically:
http://natalierose-livewithpassion.blogspot.com/2010/07/no-more-tape-over-my
-mouth.html
I was molested as a young teen. A man living under my parent's roof, paying
his rent by helping with the remodeling of our home, in training at
Greyfriar's Seminary to become a pastor , groomed me, sexually abused me,
and molested me from the time I was 13 until I was 16 years old. He was 10
years older than me. A true monster; I was made to feel worthless, as though
no one but he would ever love me. I was told that if I ever told anyone, it
would ruin his life because people simply wouldn't understand what we
shared. I became an expert at lying to my parents. I was forced into sexual
acts time and time again that no young girl should ever be subjected to.
When I was 17 years old, a friend whom I had confided in (and who I am
forever grateful to) convinced me to go to the police and press charges
against my abuser. After much persuasion from her, I went to my parents and
to the police. The process that followed was long, painful, traumatic and
awful. During this time, I was offered little to no support from the church
I attended, in fact, on the day of the sentencing my former pastor and my
abuser's pastor sat on *his* side of the courtroom, successfully compounding
my own feelings of guilt and shame. I felt terribly alienated and many times
regretted every saying anything about the abuse. Sadly, my story did not
have a just ending. My abuser, who was originally charged on 3 counts of
"child sexual abuse", "lewd and lascivious acts", and "forced sexual
contact", was convicted of "injury to child"- the same term that would have
been used had he slapped a child on Main Street. We were encouraged to go to
mediation rather than to trial, and at the last minute the visiting judge
decided the sentence/label of 'sexual offender' was too harsh. He equated
what had happened to a "homeschool teenage love affair", despite the fact
that my abuser was 10 years older than me. As a result, rather than being
labeled as a sex offender (which was the only outcome I desired), his charge
was lowered and he was sentenced to 4 months in Cottonwood prison and a few
years on probation (which he was released from early a few months ago).
After serving his sentence he was free to go. Free to live and roam wherever
he pleased, which just so happened to be right back to Moscow, back to his
lovely old church, back to MY town, where he now lives a normal life, owns
his own construction company, and eats at his favorite downtown restaurants.
Clearly he felt terrible about what happened. Clearly he felt shame and
disgust with himself. Bullshit.

Saundra,
I'm at a loss to remember which case you're talking about. Perhaps my memory
fails me.

Huh - imagine that. After far too many tragedies and far, far too many
years of the Greek system getting away with behavior that's given the UI a
bad name, it looked like the UI had finally had enough and finally had a
Dean of Students who wasn't afraid to bring some accountability to the
picture.
Hazing, for the love of God . . . HAZING.
And, what does the UI do?
It leaves Chatriand twisting in the wind. Way to GO, UI! That's my kind of
administration!
Not.
And, John Bradbury ought to be ashamed. Oh, wait . . . I almost forgot that
nut proved himself incapable of shame when he accepted an insane plea
agreement for a sexual predator and made excuses from the bench for said
predator, a predator who has continued his abusive behavior. How fitting
that Bradbury would defend the FIJIs.
As for the FIJIs - what a bunch of whiners. It doesn't speak well for the
character of the chapter that it members are unwilling to accept the
consequences, however anemic, of their behavior:

Once again the Greek system gets special treatment and the rules don't apply
to them.

Dean of Students resigns; FIJI lawyer says sanctions dropped

UI to redo investigation of FIJI hazing allegations, lawyer says
University of Idaho Dean of Students Craig Chatriand confirmed Monday he
will resign from the university effective March 9.
Chatriand said his decision came after a conflict could not be resolved with
the alumni of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, more commonly known as FIJI.
FIJI lawyer John Bradbury confirmed Monday that sanctions previously levied
against the house by the Dean of Students Office have been dropped and the
incidents that led to them would be reinvestigated.

Craig Chatriand
In his role as dean of students, Chatriand oversees the Greek advisory
office. The Dean of Students Office confirmed last week that FIJI had been
sanctioned by the Greek office following an investigation of hazing
allegations. Greek adviser Brittany Bowles declined comment last week on the
individuals involved or the details of the allegations, but said FIJI house
leadership accepted the sanctions imposed Feb. 19 by the Dean of Students
Office.
Despite the house's initial acceptance of the sanctions, FIJI continued to
explore options relating to the sanctions and the process by which they were
arrived, contacting Interim Provost and Executive Vice-President Katherine
Aiken.
"We were extremely disappointed in how this process was handled," Bradbury
said.
Bradbury said the university's new investigation will begin with review from
the Greek Community Standards Board.
Aiken declined to comment on either investigation or the removal of the
sanctions. She said she was informed of Chatriand's resignation by his
supervisor Jean Kim, vice provost for student affairs and enrollment
management. Kim did not return a request for comment on the situation as of
press time.
"I have been grateful for his service," Aiken said of Chatriand.
Chatriand would not discuss details of the initial investigation but said he
believed he was not being allowed to do the job the way he saw fit.
"There's situations that involve campus safety that I'm not able to address
in the way they need to be addressed," Chatriand said. "It's better to have
a person in this seat who can do that more effectively than I have been able
to."
Chatriand took over the position at the beginning of January following the
retirement of long-time Dean of Students and Vice Provost for Student
Affairs Bruce Pitman. He previously served as the associate dean of students
beginning in 2012, and prior to that served as the assistant director for
student success for University Housing.
Chatriand said he will work through the end of the week to wrap up any loose
ends related to his job.
"I have enjoyed working with UI students tremendously," Chatriand said. "I
have enjoyed the colleagues and opportunities available here . But when we
feel we can't do the foundational work of our job, it's time to step away
and let someone else try."
