His View: Christ Church won't mess up Co-op
By Bill Tozer
Full disclosure here. I have lived in Moscow for close to 33 years, starting way back when, if I recall correctly, one could pick up Communist propaganda at the Co-op's checkout line. I have never been to a service at Christ Church.
I recognize Doug Wilson by sight but he likely does not know me from a hole in the wall, although he always gives me a friendly nod when our eyes meet. I know, but am not particularly close to, a handful of people who attend Christ Church.
I am continually amazed at the fear the words "Doug Wilson" and "Christ Church" seem to generate in the hearts of those who boast of their tolerance and inclusivity until a conservative or a Christian shows up in their midst. Thus the current panic about Christ Church members on Co-op's board. The Co-op members' and the Daily News editorial board's responses appear to be outright religious discrimination and probably flirt with libel.
It is as though someone is saying, "We don't like your spiritual views here so be aware that we are going to keep a close eye on all you say and do while a member of this board."
Or that they could be saying, "If you try to replace our religion, which approves of sexual relations with any willing partner, with your religion, you will be in a heap of trouble."
On top of that, Lee Rozen sees fit to take a couple of gratuitous swipes at Christ Church's members on the board, first by commenting to the effect that so far having few Co-op members voting for board members has worked, but this year it didn't, and second, the editorial board is not sure it wants the likes of people who run New Saint Andrews, Logos, Bucer's, Nuart and Anselm House running the Co-op.
For starters, I would suggest that if every family in Moscow were exposed to the teachings I believe are found at Christ Church, every K-12 child in Moscow received the same quality education and moral direction received at Logos, every college student in Moscow were held to the academic, reasoning and moral standards of New Saint Andrews and hung out in places like Bucer's and Nuart, domestic violence and car prowls in this town would plummet, school achievement test scores would soar, drug pushers would have a much more difficult time peddling their poison, teen pregnancies and sexting would diminish dramatically, drunken brawls in fraternities and barrooms would quickly become a thing of the past, and we could cut the size of the police department by three quarters.
Scary thoughts, I'll tell you. Those Christ Church folks could really upset our apple carts.
I normally consider Rebecca Rod and people with her perspectives rational and sane people until they utterly cannot see that warning Christ Church members not to bring their "personal views" into Co-op's business dealings is precisely what they are doing by issuing that warning.
The Co-op is a quality institution delivering a quality and welcome service to Moscow. I doubt Christ Church board members will mess it up.
