Firearms, ammo found after Quality Inn standoff
Suspect identified
Police located two firearms and about 150 rounds of ammunition inside the hotel room of a man who was arrested Monday afternoon following a standoff with police.
Pullman Police Cmdr. Chris Tennant said ammunition, a 9 mm Glock pistol and .308 caliber bolt-action scoped rifle were taken into police custody after a search warrant was executed on the room following the standoff Monday at the Quality Inn on Bishop Boulevard in Pullman.
The Whitman County SWAT Team and a crisis negotiator were called in Monday after the man, Tyler James Thomas Lankford, allegedly made threats to harm others and refused to leave his hotel room upon police request.
Tennant said Lankford lists Moscow as his place of residence, but police believe he has been spending most of his time in Montana and only recently returned to the area. Tennant told the Daily News on Monday that Lankford had been staying at the hotel while his car was being repaired.
After approximately an hour and a half, negotiators convinced Lankford to come out of the room and he was taken into police custody without incident. Tennant said Lankford was transported to Pullman Regional Hospital on a mental health protective custody hold.
Tennant said hospital staff made the determination to release Lankford from protective around noon Tuesday. Upon his release, Lankford was arrested on alleged felony harassment charges for the reported threats and was transported to a holding cell at the Pullman Police Department and was awaiting transportation to the Whitman County Jail on Tuesday night.
"I'd like to thank the family, friends and acquaintances who started this process about two days ago by giving us a heads up," Tennant said. "I believe we were able to prevent some display of public violence that he was certainly capable of doing."
Hotel rooms surrounding Lankford's were evacuated during the incident. No one was harmed in the standoff.
Lankford will make an initial appearance today in Whitman County Superior Court.
