'Miracle kitten' survives Canton mobile home fire that kills 24 other cats
CANTON, Ohio - A "miracle kitten" survived a mobile home fire that killed 24 other cats in Canton over the weekend.

The fire broke out at about 10:45 a.m. on Saturday in the 3000 block of 12th Street Northwest.

Firefighters said they arrived to find smoke coming from the home.

According to authorities, access to the home was limited due to "hoarding-like conditions."

The kitten was brought to the Stark County Dog Warden's Office Monday morning after management found the cat at the mobile home, according to the dog warden, Jon Barber.

Lissa Brian, a dispatcher at the office, said it was probably the kitten's small size that helped him.

"Probably being so small, his mother probably protected him, but he got lucky. While holding him I've noticed little extra toes on his front, so he's a pretty unique little guy. He definitely has a will to survive," Brian said. "I think it's a miracle."

The mother of the kitten also survived and was reunited with her baby Monday afternoon.

Officials at the Canton Fire Department say the cause is believed to be electrical in nature. Authorities said one cat was found near electrical wiring.

The health department responded and declared the home uninhabitable.

The mobile home sustained about $5,000 in damage. The estimated loss of contents is about $2,000.

No one else was home at the time of the fire.
