[Vision2020] Not so fast, there...

Hi Sue,

The licenses that were issued (I know of at least one in Idaho) can’t be used right now.

I continue to be absolutely nauseated by rank hypocrisy of the crowd that likes to crow that they are small government fiscal conservatives. This kind of stunting by the Idaho GOP shows what a heaping pile of do-do that claim is.

Saundra

Wonder what that means for the folks who got them when the offices opened at 8:00AM?

Supreme Court Temporarily Blocks Gay Marriage In Idaho, Nevada

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has <http://www.scotusblog.com/2014/10/idaho-asks-same-sex-marriage-delay/#more-218812> temporary blocked Tuesday's <http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/10/07/354373981/appellate-court-strikes-down-gay-marriage-bans-in-idaho-nevada> appeals court decision that struck down bans on same-sex marriage in Idaho and Nevada.

Officials in Idaho had filed a <http://sblog.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/14A374-Idaho-marriage-stay-applic.-10-814.pdf> last-minute appeal to the Supreme Court following Tuesday's appeals court decision. In his order, Kennedy gave lawyers representing same-sex couples until 5 p.m. Thursday to respond to the appeal.

"The order means that gay and lesbian couples will not be able to obtain marriage licenses in that state in the meantime," <http://www.scotusblog.com/2014/10/idaho-asks-same-sex-marriage-delay/> Lyle Denniston of the SCOTUSblog notes.

<http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/08/justice-kennedy-blocks-gay-marriage-ruling-in-idaho-nevada/?utm_content=bufferb999a&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer> The Associated Press adds that the order also applies to Nevada.

As we reported Tuesday, the appeals court ruling itself came <http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/10/06/354053308/supreme-court-won-t-hear-gay-marriage-cases-in-new-term> a day after the Supreme Court gave tacit approval to similar decisions by three other circuit courts. The Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal of those rulings, thereby making same-sex marriage legal in 11 states. Gay marriage is now permitted in 30 U.S. states.

The AP adds that the delay in Idaho and Nevada could last just a few days.

"The full court almost certainly would weigh in to extend the delay much beyond the weekend," the news service said. "That has been the justices' practice in other cases in which a single justice initially blocked a ruling from taking effect."
