[Vision2020] Bergdahl

I absolutely agree that Gitmo and the torture and mistreatment of prisoners
is a terrible stain on the reputation of United States. However, I did not
fall off the turnip truck last night. Many, certainly not all, of those
detained at Gitmo are wretched, dangerous, fanatics with a world view that
is intolerable in an free society. Do I think that they belong in a federal
prison in the U.S. after they had received a fair trial, been represented
by competent defense attorneys and ultimately found guilty? Absolutely.
But, we should never have opened an open air prison where torture was on the
agenda. Where in the hell – and I mean that literally – did we find
sociopaths who were willing to torture people? Those people and the
jackasses who hired them should be locked up as well. Actually, since the
people involved on both sides are beyond nasty pieces of work, I’d like to
see the whole lot (after trial) be locked up in the same federal prison so
they could enjoy each other’s company for a good, long time. There is no
moral difference between to two groups in my book.

It is a disgrace and disappointment to me that President Obama and his staff
have not addressed this issue.

Well, I have been waiting six years for our President to exert his
Commander-in-Chief credentials and release some of the prisoners from Gitmo.
What we have done there is a travesty and there is no real way to win
without continuing to compromise our principles, in my opinion, so letting
them go is the lesser of evils in this case.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Release No: NR-281-14
May 31, 2014

Statement from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on the return of Sgt. Bowe
Bergdahl

A few hours ago, the family of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was informed by President
Obama that their long wait for his return will soon be over. Sgt. Bergdahl
is now under the care of the U.S. military after being handed over by his
captors in Afghanistan. We will give him all the support he needs to help
him recover from this ordeal, and we are grateful that he will soon be
reunited with his family.

Also today, I informed Congress of the decision to transfer five detainees
from Guantánamo Bay to Qatar. The United States has coordinated closely with
Qatar to ensure that security measures are in place and the national
security of the United States will not be compromised. I appreciate the
efforts of the Emir of Qatar to put these measures in place, and I want to
thank him for his instrumental role in facilitating the return of Sgt.
Bergdahl.

Sgt. Bergdahl's return is a powerful reminder of the enduring, sacred
commitment our nation makes to all those who serve in uniform. The United
States government never forgot Sgt. Bergdahl, nor did we stop working to
bring him back. I am grateful to all the military and civilian professionals
from DOD and our interagency partners who helped make this moment
possible, and to all those Americans who stood vigil with the Bergdahl
family.

Hi Roger,
I don't know the particulars of his capture - and, although the press has
covered it extensively, I doubt that they have unique or even accurate
information beyond speculation. I rejoice for him, his parents, and friends
because survival under circumstances that were akin to the most marginalized
existence is heroic from my perspective. I am quite sure that I would never
have managed at all.

I am glad that he has been released, hopefully none the worse for ware,
however he was not a hero. He was not captured in battle or anything like
that. He wandered down town by himself. Poor judgment on his part. When
Rudolph Abel was traded for Francis Gary Powers, it was a one for one deal
and Abel was unlikely to kill anyone. Anyone of the five traded here would
probably kill Americans if he got the chance. This sets a poor president. I
hope that if I were a POW, I would refuse to be traded for multiple
terrorists. Of course he may not have known the particulars od the trade.
