Faculty falling behind
The state faculty union now publishes a salary survey for all Idaho campuses. The fiscal year 2014 report can be found at www.idaho-aft.org/survey14.pdf.
Idaho faculty are way behind their national peers in salary, but Lewis-Clark State College professors are shockingly so.
LCSC full professors averaged $57,100 per year in FY14, but their peers in public baccalaureate institutions made $94,400.
The national average for assistant professors - $59,600 - is $2,500 more than LCSC full professors. LCSC full professors make 39 percent less than the national average. Associate and assistant professors are 32 percent and 24 percent behind, respectively.
For FY13, Idaho's K-12 union teachers averaged $49,734 per year, while College of Western Idaho and College of Southern Idaho faculty made only $43,545 and $48,927, respectively. Primarily because of their salary-step system (central to union contracts), faculty at North Idaho College did much better at $53,481.
Incredibly enough, LCSC's average for all faculty ranks, most with Ph.Ds and good publishing records, was only $49,400 for FY13. Their full professors were 1.3 percent behind their peers at CSI.
The national data base we use for our surveys did not receive FY14 average salaries from CWI, CSI or NIC.
Idaho's K-12 teachers have outpaced Idaho's college teachers, primarily because of collective bargaining, but the Legislature refuses to even print a bargaining bill for its higher education faculty.
Just as "add the words" against gay and lesbian discrimination needs a hearing, so do Idaho's hard-working professors.
