LETTER: At a crossroads
Moscow is in the enviable but precarious position of shaping its legacy in the agricultural-industrial corridor between campus and downtown. In "Legacy Crossing at a crossroads," Elaine Williams describes courses of action that will determine the future of Moscow's urban renewal district (Lewiston Tribune, Feb. 2, Page 1E).
Policymakers might perpetuate large-scale, single-use, car-oriented development, or enhance community and prosperity by blending retail, office, residential and entertainment uses, linked by pathways, transit and gathering spaces. Moscow is renowned for an educated workforce, social vibe and quality of life. It seems antithetical to become mired in outmoded ways of thinking.
Legacy Crossing garners widespread attention. Idaho Smart Growth recognized it for "embodying every smart growth principal applicable ... ." The National League of Cities and Local Government Council showcased it as a model for active lifestyles, livable community design, adaptation and resiliency.
As the recession dissipates, enthusiasm for carefully conceived investment opportunities is renewed. Williams describes how the public sector patiently and incrementally removed barriers to converting Legacy Crossing into an urban hot spot. The groundwork is laid. New generations are poised to make their marks. Growing numbers of retirees are relocating. Now is not the time to lose patience or resolve.
Moscow is at a crossroads. We can choose a path forward with human-scaled mixed uses, greater density and multi-modal transportation options, or perpetuate single-use buildings, large parking lots and sprawl that drain time, resources, and uniqueness of place. Tell policymakers and investors what you think. Help shape Moscow's legacy.
