Paul needs to chime in since he started this thread. Personally I don't think there's a problem with the national debt so no solution is needed other than continuously raising the debt ceiling. Thankfully we're not on the gold standard any longer, the government won't go broke as long as they have a printing press, and banks can still write loans by creating money out of thin air.

Yay! We passed $18 trillion!

The country would be in better shape if we had run up more debt, in the process of putting people back to work. But Obama wanted that, so of course the house Republican's wouldn't stand for it.

I am no economist, but it seems important to me that people (especially people in government) understand that national debt is quite different from private debt or family debt. Many right-wing politicians have made a career out of denouncing the national debt, because the average working stiff grew up thinking debt in general is undesirable and therefore we should pay off that national debt as quickly as possible.

After World War II, taxpayers faced a bigger debt, as a percentage of GDP, than we owe today. ("Nobody understands debt," Paul Krugman, New York Times, 1/1/2012, available by Googling "National Debt.) That World War II debt was never repaid, it was just subsumed in the larger debt that was handled easily by our recovering economy.

And: The debt grew almost twice as fast in the first six years of the Reagan presidency as it did in the first six years of the Obama presidency. (You can ignore this because I don't have a source, but I'm pretty sure the source I lost was a good source.)

And yes, there were REASONS why money had to be spent during the Reagan presidency. There are always reasons why it's difficult to allocate blame for a big national debt.
