Grapefruit and Drugs: A Bad Mix
Grapefruit and its juice can interact with many commonly prescribed medications, including some cholesterol-lowering statins, calcium channel blockers, antihistamines, antidepressants, and HIV drugs. And the list of troublesome drugs is “markedly increasing,” according to a review paper published in the Canadian journal CMAJ earlier this year, by the researchers who discovered the interactions more than 20 years ago.
More than 85 drugs are potentially affected by grapefruit, they reported. In particular, the number of drugs that can have serious adverse effects when combined with grapefruit more than doubled since 2008, from 17 to 43.
