[Vision2020] U.S. intelligence mining data from nine U.S. Internet companies in broad secret program

The idiocy of this amazes me.  The President said that their are oversights, that Congress knew about it, and that he thinks they have struck a nice balance.  Great.  Basically, "trust us".  Does he trust Sarah Palin's administration not to use this information to their benefit?

He also said that "no one is listening to your telephone calls".  That's nice, but that wasn't the question.  He didn't say that "no one is using your metadata to target you".

When they find whoever leaked that national security letter, we're going to have another Bradley Manning case on our hands.

Don't think that only Verizon gets these letters, either.  These national security letters are so secret that you can commit a crime just by acknowledging that one exists, even if only to show it to a lawyer for legal advice.  If we're lucky, someone else will leak one from one of the other telephone companies so that this can be verified.

One tech blog opined that the program wasn't probably used to directly identify terrorists, but once they had a person of interest it could be used to build a "tree" of all their associations. Or to check who was calling suspected numbers and locations abroad.

>Excellent point. This program was in place long before the Boston bombing and did nothing to prevent it (to say nothing of the warnings from our Russian "pals.") If the info isn't being used to prevent tragedies such as that, one can't help but wonder what the info is being used for. If you call the RNC, the NRA, of a Tea Party org. a few times too often does a note get sent to the IRS?
