Another 'responsible' gun owner charged with murder of teen now claims self-defense
In eerie parallels to the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman murder case, another 17-year-old black youth was shot to death by a white adult in Florida. The killer is now claiming self-defense.
Unfortunately this case has escaped the mainstream media’s attention and has slipped under the radar.
According to The Orlando Sentinel, 54-year-old Jacksonville gun owner MichaelDavid Dunn opened fire on a car with four unarmed teenagers inside, hitting Jordan Russell Davis twice, killing him, as he sat in the back seat.
The tragic incident happened last November the day before Thanksgiving, while the teens were parked at a local gas station. Dunn, who was reportedly in Jacksonville for his son’s wedding, had pulled into the gas station where the teens were parked playing loud music.
While his girlfriend Rhonda Rouer went into the store, Dunn allegedly asked the teens to turn down the music and they refused. Police reports say that after a war of words, Dunn opened fire with his handgun, hitting the car eight times or nine times. When it was all over, 17-year-old Davis was dead.
Dunn fled the scene with his girlfriend and spent the night at a hotel. But luckily witnesses had written down his license plate number as he sped away.
Jacksonville homicide Lt. Rob Schoonover told NBC News that Dunn was arrested Nov. 24 at his home in Satellite Beach, Fla., and charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder. Dunn has pleaded not guilty and a judge has set a trial date for September 23.
Girlfriend Rouer told police that Dunn had three rum and coke drinks at the wedding reception before they went to the gas station. She added that Dunn said he hated “thug music” when he heard the teens blasting their music from an SUV. She was allegedly inside the store when the shooting occurred.
Dunn’s lawyer Robin Lemonidis reportedly claimed that his client opened fire on a bunch of unarmed children because he felt threatened, adding “Once all the facts come out that what really happened is known, it will be very clear that Mr. Dunn acted responsibly and as any responsible firearms owner would have acted under these same circumstances."
His 20-year-old daughter Rebecca told FirstCoastNews.com that he father “just reacted” but that “everyone in his life loved him and everyone who met him, all of my friends are praying for him.”
Jordan Davis, who lived with his father Ron Davis in Jacksonville, was buried in Georgia where he was born. The teen was a junior in high school and according to his mom Lucia McBath, had recently gotten a job at McDonald’s, which he was very excited about.
Mom McBath said Dunn driving off after the shooting was “unconscionable” but didn’t want her son’s killing to be considered a hate crime. She felt something in Dunn “snapped.”
Opinion
With all due respect to mom McBath, what else can you call a grown man opening fire on a group of minors because of loud music? He was in a public place outside of a gas station for goodness sakes, not in his house where he couldn’t escape the loudness.
Even if he was in his house and the music was affecting his sensibilities, he cannot simply pull out his gun and blast away the” problem.” That’s what law-enforcement is there for -- call and make a complaint.
What is happening around the country, especially in Florida? Has the controversial “stand your ground” law emboldened “responsible, law abiding, gun owners” to become vigilantes under the guise of self-defense?
Or maybe they have taken former presidential candidate Ron Paul at his word. The good congressman from Texas, who touts himself as a Libertarian, once churned out newsletters filled with what many classify as—well there is no other way to put it—racist ramblings. You be the judge. Below is just a snippet of Paul’s advice to those living in urban areas.
“… even in my little town of Lake Jackson, Texas, I’ve urged everyone in my family to know how to use a gun in self defense. For the animals are coming.”
Before he gave advice on how to deal with “the animals that were coming,” he even renamed New York with suggestions like “Welfaria. Zooville. Rapetown. Dirtburg and Lazyopolis.”
He didn’t stop there but wrote more advice to those living in big cities, where he felt many of the “animals” preyed on their white victims.
Maybe Dunn felt preyed upon by the teens’ loud “animal” music?
