UI student dies of self-inflicted gunhot
Posted: Sunday, January 20, 2013 4:23 pm
A University of Idaho student died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound early Saturday morning in the Gooding Wing of the Wallace residence hall.
Moscow Police Chief David Duke said the victim was found by a suitemate around 9 a.m. in his dorm room, where he had apparently shot himself in the head with a revolver. Police have notified the victim’s family but are not yet releasing the identity of the 18-year-old Middleton, Idaho, male.
Moscow Police received a call around 10 p.m. Friday from the victim’s roommate and the floor adviser, stating the student had a gun in his room. Officers responded to the call and removed a .45 caliber handgun, believed to be registered to the victim’s family. University of Idaho policy prohibits students from keeping guns in residence halls.
The victim later contacted the police to retrieve his gun and officers informed him he could pick it up Tuesday. Hours later, he shot himself with a second gun police believe he was keeping in his dorm room.
“We have talked to those in the dorm rooms and with the family but haven’t been informed of any specific medical issues that would lead us to believe he was a danger to himself,” Duke said.
Police also found a series of notes in the room the victim left to his family.
