[Vision2020] Once in a blue moon

It turned out Dr. Joe did indeed ask the proper question 'What is your definition of a blue moon?' My definition had been the second full moon within the same calendar month. It turns out there are more definitions as Tom points out below. And it turns out that last night's moon was a 'seasonal blue moon'. I finally found a link to it. Thanks all!

Dr. J.(oe Campbell) inquires:
"What is your definition of a blue moon?"
Well, Joe, that depends . . .
Are we talking about the celestial body "blue moon"?

Or are we talking about the Oakland Athletics ace pitcher from years past, John "Blue Moon" Odom?

In any case . . .
"This month had a full, then a new;Now a second full moon comes in view.As a metaphor thereFor the odd and the rare,This moon we refer to as blue."
Perhaps "Blue Moon" was best explained back in the 50s by the Marcels . . .

I haven't read any details about this, but there is a blue moon out tonight. And we won't have another one until 2015. Considering that it's Aug 20-21, there is max a 3 week window since the last full moon. And with a 3 week window, it seems to me that this phenomenon would occur more than once in a blue moon.
