Michael Leach, 59, a former Rochester, N.Y., police officer, was staying with his son at the Clarks Beach Motel in Herkimer, N.Y., last summer, The Little Falls Times reported Sunday. He had been sleeping for a few hours when a noise startled him awake. He saw a dark figure in the doorway and discharged a weapon he kept nearby. At first he didn’t know where the bullet went, but he soon discovered he had shot his son, Matthew Leach, 38, killing him. According to court documents, the elder Leach was horrified.
“I killed my own son. Are you kidding me?” Leach allegedly told a police officer at the scene. “This can’t be happening. Oh my God, just kill me now.”
Leach has been charged with second-degree murder.

It's not common knowledge, so please don't spread this around, but a gun owner is not required to just fire his weapon at everything he or she sees.
A simple "why tf are you climbing in my window?" is allowed.
