I vote we try the Finnish model....socialist, highly unionized, high performing. It could be a start.
Interesting graphic, Gary. One of the serious points of comparison is what we spend for education is not what other nations call “education.” For example, much of our funding for special education (which is important, but nevertheless huge, ) other nations allocate under health services, etc. I’m not claiming “apples and oranges” because it’s such a trite phrase, but it really is difficult to talk about comparisons when the measures aren’t comparable. One way we could save a bundle is to cut back on mandated nationally-normed (supposedly) testing, which is making big money for these companies, but works against excellent teaching.

They need a task force to figure out how to improve education in the State of Idaho. Really? How about this suggestion, hire teachers, pay them a livable wage, and supply them with materials to teach the children. Frankly I am surprised that Idaho even cares about education considering it spends so little money on education compared to about 45 other states and most of the modern world.

The Idaho Task Force for Improving Education will hold a series of community forums across the state in April.
A 31-member task force is charged with developing recommendations to improve public education in the state.
Gov. Butch Otter proposed the task force in December and asked the State Board of Education to appoint members, lead the discussion and develop a series of recommendations in time for the 2014 Legislature.
This month’s forums will provide information and seek input on K-12 education issues in Idaho.
Forums will be held at the following locations:
• Wednesday, April 10, 6:30 p.m. Nampa High School Little Theatre, 203 Lake Lowell, Nampa.
• Thursday, April 11, 6:30 p.m. O’Leary Middle School auditorium, 2350 Elizabeth Blvd., Twin Falls.
• Monday, April 15, 6:30 p.m. Meriwether Lewis Hall, Room 100, Lewis-Clark State College, Lewiston.
• Tuesday, April 16, 6:30 p.m. Lake Coeur d’Alene Room, North Idaho College Student Union Building, Coeur d'Alene.
• Monday, April 22, 6:30 p.m. Tingey Auditorium, University Place, 1776 Science Center Drive, Idaho Falls.
• Tuesday, April 23, 6:30 p.m. Century High School, 7801 W. Diamondback Dr., Pocatello.
• Thursday, April 25, 6:30 p.m. Lincoln Auditorium, Idaho Capitol Building, 700 W. Jefferson, Boise.
The community forums in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls and Boise will be streamed on the web by Idaho Public Television at idahoptv.org
Those not able to attend one of the forums can provide feedback and comments via email at taskforce at osbe.idaho.gov.
