More than 1,400 UI students to graduate
U.S. Marine Corps commandant to deliver address
Thursday, May 10, 2012
The University of Idaho's spring commencement ceremony is Saturday in
the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
A total of 1,432 students are expected to graduate beginning at 9:30
a.m. The ceremony is free and open to the public, with seating
available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Degree candidates will begin lining up at 8:15 a.m. along University Avenue.
U.S. Marine Corps Commandant and UI alumnus Gen. James F. Amos will
deliver the commencement address. Amos, a native of Wendell, Idaho,
graduated from the UI in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in
finance/business and economics.
After his confirmation by the U.S. Senate on Oct. 1, 2010, Amos became
the highest-ranking UI alumnus in U.S. military history and the first
aviator to become commandant of the Marine Corps.
The university will award Amos with an honorary degree during the ceremony.
Other honorary degree recipients are David L. Nicandri, former
director of the Washington State Historical Society, and Horace
Axtell, a Nez Perce Tribe elder and Army veteran who served in World
War II. Nicandri already holds a master's degree in history from the
UI.
Also during the ceremony, the UI Alumni Association will induct two
alumni into its Hall of Fame: Linda Shreve Davidson, associate vice
president for development and alumni affairs and chief development
officer/West Coast for the University of Tennessee, and Wayne C.
Solomon, an aerospace engineer who led the Aerospace Engineering
Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before
his retirement.
The Alumni Association will also name Amos' wife, Bonnie Amos, an
honorary alumnus of the UI. She has served as honorary co-chairwoman
of the UI's Operation Education veterans' scholarship program since
2010.
Following the approximately 2.5-hour commencement ceremony, each UI
college will host a reception for its graduates and their family,
friends and instructors. The locations of those receptions, in
addition to more commencement information, are listed online at
www.uidaho.edu/commencement.
The commencement ceremony can be viewed live online at
www.uidaho.edu/live. The UI College of Law commencement ceremony,
which begins at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Kibbie Dome, will also be
streamed online.
