[Vision2020] A Celebration of the Confederacy - No Thanks

Good luck baiting Gary on anything Tom. I remember this event but can't answer your questions below without going back into the archives (or onto your site) which I'm too lazy to do. But obviously the presenter was from our least favorite / unfriendly church with the 'pastor' who has an unwavering adoration of the Antebellum South.

For me personally - better the devil you know - so I'd rather them just be their typical true selves so that everyone can see them for who they really are and watch them eventually get their just deserts - which almost never seems to fail.

Pop quiz, Mr. Crabtree . . .
The graphic below, and several other similar graphics, was presented at the Moscow Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Annual Retreat on August 5, 2004 as part of a discussion on leadership.
Who was the presenter and what elected position did (s)he hold at that time?

Seeya round town, Moscow.

The flag is part of a historical display
and is in no way a "celebration" of the confederacy. If you are bound and
determined to have a conniption every time the stars and bars pops up you're
destined to spend way too much time in a hyper agitated state. Some folks
like that I guess but, I would find it tiresome. What is hard to defend is the
silly notion that every time this flag pops up that it has to be construed
as a statement that all all things antebellum were wonderful and
need to be brought back. Some things may have been and some definitely weren't
with slavery being chief amongst the evils. It's gone now (thank goodness, good
riddance) and it's not coming back no matter how may flags fly. From a practical
stand point it would make more sense to develop a case of knicker kink over the
flags of Mauritania, Sudan, Niger, Mali, Pakistan, and the UAE. Countries where
slavery is actively practiced.

Thank you for your kind seasonal wishes
("stout" fellas like myself enjoy the heat like goldfish enjoy the Gobi) and my

P.S. I was wrong in my earlier post in
referring to the handgun in the display as a pistol. It is a revolver.
A pal of mine pointed this out to me within about 40 seconds of my hitting
the send key. I should (and do) know better. My head hangs in abject
shame...

... and now I'm over it.

Gary,
you are just plain wrong about this. There is a ton of material available
locally about the GAR, pictures of GAR parades down a very muddy Main St., and
lots of local newspaper stories about candidates running for local office and
bragging about their Union experience. It would take less than three hours
and a few bucks to get a mighty fine display put together. None of which has
anything on earth to do with a confederate rag and the pointless display of an
old pistol in our court house.
Self
righteous rant my ass, mindless defense of the indefensible ought to be your
concern.
But,
I do hope you are having a nice summer.

Talk about mole hill to mountain mutations, this display has
been up in the courthouse lobby for months. Previously it contained a similarly
educational display with WW II as the topic of interest. I take it that no
one on this forum who is wailing and gnashing their teeth has actually looked at
the display. There is nothing in it that is even remotely a "celebration"
of the confederacy. Aside from the flag and a pistol, every thing else is
union memorabilia and items with a connection between the GAR and various
locals.

It sure doesn't take much to set the usual suspects off on a
self righteous rant.

Hi Tom,

I am sorry to be writing to you with a complaint but I
must. I know that you and the other county commissioners are not
responsible for the display in the lobby of the courthouse. Nonetheless,
the fact that that display as been up for at least two days without (apparently)
concern on your part is making my head explode. (Maybe you are out of town and
don’t know about this – if so, I apologize to you) I hate to use the expression
WTF, but really Tom, WTF. What would national news outlets think, given
Idaho’s connection with the Aryan Nations, Doug Wilson’s Southern Slavery as
It Was, and local freaky Tea Party morons who think State’s Rights trump
all? If the Confederacy is going to celebrated front and center in the
Courthouse it is my expectation that the following images (make sure the county
contacts the appropriate parties for permission to show what the Confederacy
really represented.

And, while I am exploding (but not at you) could you please let
me and the rest of your Latah County constituency know who is responsible for
this display. I can’t believe that Ms. Petersen has any interest in
glorify the pestilent-ridden sink hole of the Ol’ South.

Thanks, and I so hope I won’t to be this crabby for at least the
rest of the summer.
