PRESS RELEASE
Mayor Chaney Re-appointed as Chair to NLC University Communities Council
January 18, 2012 (Washington, DC) - Mayor Nancy Chaney has been re-appointed to chair the National League of Cities' (NLC) 2012 University Communities Council. NLC President Ted Ellis, Mayor of Bluffton, Indiana, also appointed Chaney to the NLC Board Policy and Legislative Committee. Chaney has served on the NLC Board of Directors since election in November, and is President of the Association of Idaho Cities.
"Access to quality education is integral to workforce preparedness, economic advancement, social vitality, and environmental sustainability," Chaney said. "The UCC affords avenues to share best practices, build alliances, and identify university resources that enhance well-being. The City of Moscow and University of Idaho enjoy a strong relationship, and cooperate in a variety of areas, including multi-modal transportation, community development, campus policing, job creation, social justice, the arts, resource management, and Palouse Knowledge Corridor, to name a few."
The University Communities Council is a group of elected officials from municipalities with universities or institutions of higher education within their borders or within adjacent municipalities. The group encourages active involvement of university communities in the organization, its policy-making process, and in programs at NLC. UCC vice chairs for 2012 are Grand Forks, N.D. Community Government Relations Officer Pete Haga and Waco, Texas Council Member Alice Rodriguez.
The National League of Cities is the nation's oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 U.S. cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million people.
