I just don't think people know what "Liberal" means anymore.  If they look it up it will not be any clearer to them. A liberal in 1962 is not the same as a liberal in 2012. Progressive is more descriptive and people know what it means. Liberal is also circumstantial and relative whereas progressive is not. Today's liberal is tomorrow's conservative.

I totally disagree. Liberal as in CIVIL LIBERTIES. The "excessive government spending" affiliation is a made up political story. There simply IS no more excessive liberal spending than war, which is not generally affiliated with liberals. Don't let the bad arguments of your enemies control the labels of your position. You'll note a similarity here with my views on free will, as I expressed them in the lengthy post which likely no one read. Perhaps a good thing!

But I think most of the liberals/progressives on this list agree with you and like the name "progressive" better, which is why I often use that label. I'm a liberal, though!
