PRESS RELEASE
City officials urge citizens to continue to conserve water

August 8, 2012 (Moscow, Idaho) - City of Moscow officials would like to remind and encourage customers to continue to conserve water while one of the City's main sources of water, Well #9 remains out of service while the pump motor servicing that well is repaired.

The City appreciates everyone's commitment to helping keep water use to a minimum. Officials understand the stress of the season with higher temperatures on landscaping and increased demand as residents try to keep cool. The City thanks all residents for their assistance and helpfulness in this matter. In light of increased temperatures and with the return of students, conservation efforts will be very important in maintaining water supplies without introducing restrictions.

Well #9 is one of the City's primary wells and supplies approximately 40% of the City's drinking water. The pump should be replaced by early September. In July the average water consumption was 3.6 million gallons per day and in the first five days of August that average climbed to 3.9 million gallons per day. Total current capacity with Well #9 out of service is 4.5 million gallons per day. Should the average gallon per day use approach the maximum of 4.5 million gallons, water restrictions will need to be implemented to ensure service to the community, such as a mandatory irrigation reduction or prohibition.

Tips for reducing water use include:

* Shorter showers, shallower baths. Turn off the water when not rinsing in the shower.

* Install water saving devices available free to Moscow Residents.

* Keep drinking water in the refrigerator. This will reduce the amount of water that is generally wasted when waiting for the cold water to reach the faucet.

* Turn the faucet off when brushing teeth or shaving.

* Check and fix leaky faucets, toilets, and hoses.

* Rinse dishes in standing water rather than running the faucet.

* Use the garbage disposal as little as possible.

* Do not use the toilet as a trashcan- only flush refuse-related items.

* Run clothes-washers and dishwashers only when full.

* Reduce landscape watering and be sure to follow the Water Conservation Ordinance available at http://www.ci.moscow.id.us/pub_works/water/conservation/irrigation.aspx. Note that acceptable watering times are from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m.

* Sweep sidewalks and driveways rather than spraying them clean with water.

* Limit car washing at home. Don't run the hose when washing the car instead try using a bucket of soapy water and use the hose only to rinse.
