[Vision2020] Narcotics = Good, Marijuana = Evil?

Author Michael Pollan wrote a really interesting article in the center
spread of Atlantic Monthly about 12 years ago. It was about growing those
gorgeous P. somniferum poppies in your garden, and how the government can,
if you grow these, legally confiscate your house with no due process
whatsoever. In the article, Pollan points out that the government actually
does NOT WISH TO LEGALIZE some of these inane drugs for certain peculiar and
special reasons, one so that they can take your house away if they really
need to do so. Specifically, the article covered Papaver somniferum, which I
used to grow extensively... the big puffy pink one. Turns out that it is
more or less tolerated by authorities until you start doing stuff they don't
like (like protesting Megaloads or things like that), or if you actually
know what it is that is growing in your garden. No kidding. The garden
cultivars have essentially no active chemicals whatsoever to speak of, but
you can get busted anyway.... just because you can't stop the gov from doing
so. Catch 22 for real. P. somniferum is not to be confused with the large
perennial Papaver orientalis that most people have around town in abundance.
(Aside for avid gardeners: I used to get a seed catalog from Britain that
sold Papaver somniferum under the name of P. paeonioflorum (actually a
subvariety of P. somniferum anyway). They finally got the elbow nudge from
the U.S. authorities so now you can't buy them any more. They had some great
color varieties too! Darn. European society isn't as stupid and repressive
as in the U.S. so you can grow all kinds of things over there. By the way,
morning glory vine seeds produce a powerful LSD-like high (and nausea), but
how come they are 100% legal to grow? My favorite variety.... "Pearly Gates"
(for the flowers only).)

I agree, it makes no sense not to. I think that this is one reason Ron Paul
has so much support.
