Of CEOs and politicians
First day of fall and the megaloads are pushing through Idaho. An interesting bit of information turned up recently (do a Web search for "Oil Change International"). It suggests that the demand for oil in the U.S. is declining (recession and more mileage friendly cars). So why the big need to rip up Alberta, crumble highways in Idaho and build a pipeline to Texas?
Well, the biggest backer of the pipeline is Texas-based Valero Oil. So when the Alberta crude gets to Texas, Valero will refine it into diesel fuel and then export it to South America and China (where the new rich love diesels). And since the refinery operates as a "foreign trade zone" it won't pay tax or custom duties on its exports.
So all those big megaloads won't help Moscow or Idaho or the U.S. or Canada but will sure help some CEOs of big companies, and the politicians they fund.
