Yeah, well, it wasn't so bad back in the days when the smell of freshly sawn 
wood emanated from the bookshelves in the new bookstore on the east side of 
the street, and it was possible to walk across to the west side of the street 
and get a Spruceburger and a beer.

Mort's was still around. Whether their bookkeeper really did do the books just 
for what he could drink -- and was overpaid -- I don't know.

Pitchers and pizza were available further south down the street at Rathaus -- 
then in a building big enough to hold an airplane and its passengers.
