[Vision2020] Mega-loads Ultimate Impact: Geological Society of America Oct. 2011 Meeting: Archean to Anthropocene

The problem with nuclear power, aside from the obvious ones, is that it requires a great deal of water. Water is also heated, mitigating most advances you have with slowing global warming.

We also will still consume more and more oil because third world countries are starting to use it more and have huge populations, in addition, we also use oil for the production of plastics, which is in just about everything.

People also forget that most cars that run off electricity are pulling power from outlets that run off the burning of coal.

There is no such thing as free clean energy. I would try to use the Sun more and reduction of usage.  Some neighborhood communities are starting to go off the grid by setting up locally run solar power farms that power the houses.

Even if global warming is as big a problem as the worst climate models
predict (which I don't concede - it's all about the feedbacks), we
should still seek other sources of oil in the short term for a variety
of practical and political reasons, the main one being that we simply
aren't ready to move off of oil yet.  Not if we want to keep an
industrial-based civilization capable of mitigating the worst effects of
climate change.

To me, the proper plan seems obvious.  Subsidize nuclear power, continue
incentives for greener power sources and electric and hybrid cars, and
when we have a foundation of nuclear power plants for base power
consumption and an array of renewable energy sources and electric cars
that are viable economically, start raising taxes on oil imports.

I can back this plan myself because it will reduce our dependence upon
foreign oil and will help with actual pollution problems.

I'd also suggest funding more research into thorium reactors and breeder
reactors, so we don't replace one scarcity problem with another.
