Earth Day Commitment at the Moscow Food Co-op

In April, the Moscow Food Co-op received the 2011 Mayor’s Earth Day Award in the business category. The award is given by the city of Moscow for demonstrated commitment to environmental conservation and awareness.

Also for Earth Month, in April, the Co-op permanently eliminated plastic bags from its checkout stands. That decision was part of the Bag It! project, an international effort to lessen the use of single-use plastic bags by consumers.

“Customers and our members are really happy that the bags are gone, if they notice the absence at all, and seem to appreciate the help in kicking a bad habit,” said Carol Spurling, Co-op Outreach and Ownership Coordinator.

The Co-op still offers paper bags, and will continue to reward customers who use their own re-usable bags with a dime refund.

The Co-op is located at 121 East Fifth Street in downtown Moscow.
