[Vision2020] Note to Bob Kustra

I can't think of any more false claim about the UI students than "With
success comes arrogance, and with arrogance comes some rudeness. That is
exactly what has happened here in this little school in the middle of the
Idaho potato fields." That has not happened at UI!

I teach at WSU but we have joint grad program with UI and I get some
students from Idaho who come to WSU to take classes (about 2 per semester).
Plus, I teach an occasional class at UI, filling in for a friend, and I've
given lectures in Moscow.

I would say that UI students are less arrogant than WSU students by a long
shot. I love my WSU students, and many of them are exceptional. Nonetheless,
arguably most people in Pullman would rather be in Seattle (over 2/3 of the
students are from the west side, I think) but no one in Moscow would rather
be in Boise. In any event, the UI students are well-mannered, IMO.

I taught at BSU for 2 years, and I would say that my Idaho students were
much less arrogant and much better in in terms of their manners than any
other students that I've ever had -- which includes students from
Washington, Ohio, and Arizona.

In general, "manners" are not important to the American youth but in Idaho,
they are more important than they are elsewhere. Go, Idaho!
