Idaho official signs off on megaloads permits
January 18, 2011, 12:26 pm

Idaho’s transportation chief is giving ConocoPhillips the green light to
transport massive oil refinery equipment along U.S. Highway 12 in
northcentral Idaho, The Associated Press is reporting.

Idaho Transportation Director Brian Ness announced today he intended to
issue the oil giant permits to haul the equipment from the port in
Lewiston to its refinery in Billings, Mont.

Ness ruled after accepting the recommendation of a hearing officer who was
appointed to oversee an administrative challenge to the agency’s earlier
decision to issue permits.

Ness concluded the shipments can be moved safely and without damage to
roads, bridges and only minor disruption to traffic and emergency
services.

Opponents say oversized commercial loads are a bad idea for a roadway that
winds along a scenic and protected river corridor.
