PRESS RELEASE
Title: Mayor Nancy Chaney Hosts 2nd Poverty on the Palouse Forum Meeting
February 8, 2011 - Mayor Nancy Chaney will host the 2nd in a series of Poverty on the Palouse Forums on February 16, 2011 in Council Chambers at Moscow City Hall at 4 p.m. This forum has been developed to coordinate efforts to meet the needs of low income people in Moscow and the Palouse, in response to concerns expressed by service providers about their ability to meet increasing demands on their limited resources.
The first meeting of the forum group was held on December 15, 2010. At that meeting, all representatives generated compelling stories about trying to make ends meet--as agencies, volunteer organizations, and for individuals and families directly affected by job loss, healthcare expenses, disability, economic recession, and other circumstances. Comments during and following the Poverty on the Palouse Forum demonstrated a clear need for improved communication and coordination among service providers, and for more efficient ways for people who need help to find it.
At the next Poverty on the Palouse Forum meeting suggested topics for discussion include:
1) Issues: Identify key issues, including overlaps and gaps in services. Initiate a comprehensive community assessment of needs and resources.
2) Mission: Establish a cohesive vision and mission statement.
3) Organizational structure: Design an integrated communications system to facilitate interaction among providers and easy navigation by clients.
4) Pending legislation affecting low income households.
Next steps for the group includes developing an organizational structure and several models may be considered, including the "211" automated system by Health and Welfare and a modified version of the multi-agency National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
These meetings are free and open to the public for those interested in Poverty on the Palouse.
