[Vision2020] Cain Quits

If committing adultery is a disqualification for running for public off, the about 2/3 of women and 3/4 to 4/5 men in the U.S. could not run.

I think, however, Darrell, your point about the oath has some merit.

When we elect (or appoint) someone to public office, we would like to be able to trust them -- to believe that they will try to do what they promise and to believe what they say, that they will not change their positions without reasonable and good cause, and when they do change their position, they will tell us truthfully why.

However, in reality it is not that simple. It's what you can trust public officials with that's important.

You've probably heard the following from the stumper rancher's sayings of wisdom:

"You can trust him/her with your wife/husband, but not your pocketbook." Or visa versa.
"You can trust her/him with $10, but not with $10,000." Or visa versa

In the scheme of things, size matters. Adultery is is a small transgression compared to, for example, not promoting the regulation of the financial industry in such a way so that it can't almost bankrupt the country or rape the the average citizen, or going to a war, expensive in human misery and costs in dollars, on knowingly very flimsy evidence of WMDs.

[As an aside, I notice that Mrs. Cain was remarkable in the lack of enthusiasm she has shown for her husband the two or three times that she has agreed to appear in public with him. Newt Gingrich does not look like Dorian Gray, but he does look like the portrait.]

Our country is hurting for honest, capable leadership not beholden to any specific special interest. I am afraid that I don't see any immediate solution to this problem.

Timing. Gingrich infidelity is old news. Gingrich was chock full of hypocrisy at the time! The man in the glass house literally was throwing stones...

While I wouldn't vote for either of them, why is adultery a deal breaker for Cain, but not for Gingrich?

For me, it's not the adultery, but the hypocrisy of being a "family values" advocate while committing adultery.

I would think that we should be more concerned about how well he is able to perform his job duties, first and foremost.

However, if we want to talk about honesty and integrity then we shouldn't judge Cain before we know for sure whether or not he actually committed adultery. From what I've heard, she says he did and he says he didn't. Each one of them has reason enough to lie about it. I'm not a Cain supporter, but I hate to see someone driven from the race because of sex. As long as he sticks to human beings old enough to legally consent to sex, I don't care what he does in the bedroom.

If he couldn't keep an oath to his wife, why should we think he can keep the presidential oath?

Why do people look to the President as a model of family values, anyway? The President doesn't affect much in that regard, since the President doesn't author legislation. He's a public servant doing a specific job. I no more care if he is unfaithful to his significant other than I care if my local librarian is. Which is not much, since it's not my business.

Herman Cain announced on Saturday that he is suspending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

The news comes in the wake of Cain being accused of having an extramarital affair and sexual harassment charges from more than a decade ago resurfacing. The former CEO of Godfather's Pizza has vehemently denied any wrongdoing amid the controversy.

On Saturday, Cain called the allegations "false" and said that they have had a "tremendous" and "painful price" on his family. His wife, Gloria Cain, stood behind him on stage as he spoke in their home stage of Georgia.

Looking to the future, Cain told his supporters that he is now turning to "Plan B," a new effort and website (TheCainSolutions.com) working "to be a voice for the people."
